Respect and safety

Serious training, supportive community

Safety is the foundation of everything we teach. Students respect training partners and instructors, focus on learning during class and practice good hygiene to keep the mats safe. Everyone taps and everyone respects the tap.

We keep the environment inclusive by matching partners sensibly for size, age and skill, and by teaching new students how to train safely before they pick up intensity. Our coaches stay close to the action in every class.

You can read the full rules on our mat etiquette page, and you are welcome to ask any coach about how we handle safety for children, teens and adults. If you have a health concern, talk to a healthcare professional before starting any new activity.

Common worries

Nervous about starting? You are not alone

I am not in shape.

Neither were most of our members when they began. Classes are scaled to your level, you can rest whenever you need to and fitness arrives faster than you expect.

I have never done martial arts.

Perfect. Beginners learn the basics step by step, with coaches and training partners who remember what the first day felt like.

I worry my child will get hurt or bullied.

We group kids by age and skill, supervise closely and teach respect from the first class. Confidence and good habits help children handle conflict calmly.

I am older than everyone else.

Our adult classes include students of many ages and backgrounds. You will find training partners at your pace, and coaches who adjust drills to suit you.

I do not know which class to pick.

That is what the free trial week is for. Sample a few classes, talk with a coach and choose the one that fits.

Our coaches
