Authentic Muay Thai for adults who want real results

Muay Thai is the national sport of Thailand, and it is known as the art of eight limbs because it uses fists, elbows, knees and shins. At Manifest MMA, our adult Muay Thai program in La Habra teaches that full toolkit in a supportive room where nobody is expected to know anything on day one.

You will learn a proper stance, how to throw the jab and cross, how to kick with your shin instead of your foot, and how to defend with your guard and footwork. As you progress, you add knees, elbows and clinch work. Each skill is broken into small pieces, drilled on pads with a partner or coach, then pushed into timed bag rounds so you feel the work in your lungs.

The result is a class that works like a high-end workout and teaches a real martial art at the same time. Students of every fitness level build strength, learn useful striking skills and walk out feeling like they accomplished something.

Our Muay Thai coaches include Isaac, Tony and Obed, who bring fight experience and a patient, encouraging style to every session. You can meet them on our coaches page.

What a class looks like

A typical Muay Thai class at Manifest MMA

  1. Warm up

Jump rope, shadow boxing and mobility drills get your body ready and your mind on the mat.

  2. Learn the technique

A coach demonstrates a strike or combination, explains why it works and walks the room to correct form.

  3. Pad and bag rounds

Partner pad work and timed bag rounds turn the technique into speed, power and rhythm.

  4. Condition and cool down

Core, bodyweight and stretching finish the session so you recover well and feel strong.

Class structure varies by coach and by day. Check the class schedule for times, or call (562) 554-6585 to ask which session suits a beginner.

New to Muay Thai

Muay Thai for beginners: what to know before your first class

Do I need to be in shape?

No. You do not need to be fit before you start. Getting in shape is what the classes are for. Move at your own pace, take breaks when you need them and let your coach adjust the work.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable athletic clothes you can move in, such as shorts or leggings and a t-shirt. Shoes stay off the mat. Bring water and arrive about 15 minutes early so a coach can get you settled.

Do I need my own gear for the free trial?

No. You can train your trial week without buying anything. If you decide to continue, your coach will point you to gloves and shin guards that fit your budget and your goals.

Will I have to spar?

Technique and fitness are the heart of class. Any partner work is matched to your experience, supervised and built around safety. Tell your coach what you want from training and they will guide the pace.

How often should I train?

Two to three sessions a week is a strong starting point for most adults. The CDC recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate activity weekly plus muscle-strengthening work on two days, and Muay Thai covers both.

Check your fitness level and any health conditions before you start a new sport. If you have concerns, talk with a healthcare professional first.

Yes, both kickboxing and Muay Thai can be excellent forms of exercise for adults. Here are some reasons why they are considered effective workouts:

Cardiovascular Fitness

Kickboxing and Muay Thai involve dynamic movements, rapid footwork, and a combination of punches, kicks, and knee strikes. Engaging in these activities can elevate your heart rate, improve cardiovascular endurance, and contribute to overall cardiovascular fitness.

Full-Body Workout

Both kickboxing and Muay Thai utilize multiple muscle groups throughout the body. The repetitive nature of striking techniques, combined with defensive movements, can provide a comprehensive full-body workout, targeting muscles in the arms, legs, core, and back.

Strength Training

The resistance generated from striking pads or heavy bags in kickboxing and Muay Thai can help build muscular strength, particularly in the upper and lower body. The conditioning drills and bodyweight exercises commonly incorporated into training sessions also contribute to strength development.

Flexibility

The kicking techniques in both kickboxing and Muay Thai require a good range of motion in the hips and legs. Regular practice can improve flexibility and enhance overall joint mobility.

Stress Relief

The high-intensity nature of kickboxing and Muay Thai can serve as an effective outlet for stress and tension. The physical exertion and focus required during training can promote mental well-being and provide a healthy way to release pent-up energy.

Coordination and Balance

The combination of striking combinations, defensive maneuvers, and footwork in kickboxing and Muay Thai can enhance coordination and balance. This is particularly beneficial as you learn to move efficiently while executing various techniques.

Self-Defense Skills

While the primary focus of kickboxing and Muay Thai classes may be fitness and skill development, the techniques learned can have practical applications in self-defense situations.

Variety and Enjoyment

Kickboxing and Muay Thai offer diverse training routines, preventing monotony and keeping participants engaged. The enjoyable and challenging nature of these martial arts can contribute to long-term adherence to a fitness routine.

Before starting a kickboxing or Muay Thai program, it’s important to consider your fitness level and any existing health conditions. If you have any concerns, consult with a healthcare professional before engaging in these activities. Additionally, finding a qualified instructor and training in a safe and supportive environment is crucial for a positive experience and effective workout.
